Robert C. Gallo, M.D. is the Chief of Tumor Cell Biology at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes in Bethesda, Maryland.
Dr. Gallo has been universally recognized for his achievements in pioneering the entire field of retro virology. His most recent accomplishment was the co-discovery with his team of coworkers and with scientists at the Pasteur Institute that AIDS was caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). He assisted with the development of the blood tests to detect this virus, which is already prolonging thousands of lives and has lead to much of our information on the mechanisms of HIV-induced disease.
Dr. Gallo has received many awards for his scientific research and continues to work toward the understanding and elimination of the AIDS virus.
